On 16 August 2025, the community gathered at Wonderkop, Marikana for the 13th Commemoration of the Marikana Massacre. The day was a moment of reflection, remembrance, and unity, paying tribute to those who lost their lives and acknowledging the resilience of their families and community.

A Focus on Safety and Care

This year’s commemoration was carefully planned to create a safe and respectful environment for all who attended. Guided by the Event Safety & Security Planning Committee (ESSPC) and in partnership with the local Joint Operations Committee (JOC), the event followed the requirements of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SASREA).

The goal was to ensure that the community could come together in dignity and peace, with every detail considered to support both the meaning of the day and the wellbeing of participants.

Careful Risk Planning

A detailed event risk assessment and certified event safety plan were developed to anticipate and manage potential challenges. These steps reflected a commitment to creating a safe space where remembrance could unfold without disruption.

Skilled Teams in Place

To further support the event, a dedicated team of professionals were on hand, including:

• Event Safety Officers overseeing the flow of the event and ensuring compliance

• Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Managers monitoring the wellbeing of staff and attendees

• Qualified medical services available to provide assistance if needed

Each of these roles contributed quietly and effectively, helping the day proceed smoothly and respectfully.

The 13th Marikana Commemoration was not only a time to honor history but also an example of how remembrance can be supported by thoughtful planning and care for people. Through this approach, lives were remembered, the community was supported, and safety was always at the heart of the gathering.
